I Kissed A Girl

Hi!

I heard this on satellite radio via a rental car, and thought, "Wow"!

I recently listened to the Jill Sobule song, on a similar subject, and thought that Jill's song was OK, but Katy's was great! I gave it 4 stars because it is short, and with simple lyrics...it's a great hit song, but won't be a classic.

Oh, and for those of you who didn't like the song, my musical tastes are ALL over the place. I have something of EVERYTHING on my iTunes, except in the Classicial genre. I have TONS of Baroque music, but NO other classical types. I have all kinds of modern music, from the '50s to today, in all genres.

Oh, I also have a good amount of Christian music that I like.

This song was meant to be what every reviewer here is complaining about. A bubblegum pop song just like the ones MTV used to play back in the 80's. It's got a generic beat and a catchy hook and sticks in your head for days. In fact, if this song were recorded 20+ years ago it would have been a hit back then as well (only with a better music video). If you want a song with deep lyrics or some type of political message, then I suggest you buy an Alanis Morissette or Jack Johnson album.

Catchy tune. I prefer the Jill Sobule song of the same name and topic. Both are intended to have a little shock value, which hopefully contribute to the chipping away of biases. Perry's is more of a dance beat. Sobules is more in the Indigo Girls sort of genre. Sobule's is also more clever - building up a story that leads to the main lyric.

Back in 1995, Jill Sobule had a hit single called "I Kissed A Girl", which had the catchy chorus: "I Kissed a girl, her lips were sweet, it was just like kissing me, but better." It was a catchy and damn fun to listen to. Now 13 years later, a no-talent named Katy Perry releases a damn song with the same song, just less catchy and a scheme to get attention. This is seriously the worst song ever recorded. Not only does Katy Perry have a HORRIBLE voice (Why is she yelling?), but WHO CARES IF YOU KISSED A GIRL? Besides, what's next, I Got It On With A Chicken (And I Liked It)?

Hey, Katy Perry kissed a girl and decided to sing about it! Okay, so what's the big deal? I guess it depends on where you live because over here in Europe, there's not much fuss about this song. In the U.S. though, that's another story. I received this one from my monthly record pool and it didn't strike me as a great song at first. Oh, wait, it still doesn't strike me in that fashion. I think the lyrical content is more interesting than the music. To be totally honest, it's just a catchy pop theme, easy to listen too, not too brash or too heavy. You hear it played over and over and over and you'll find yourself whistling to it just like everything else on the radio. A great record (song)? Not at all! Just a little fun and something to talk about. Nothing more, nothing less.
