Still Working Great
I've had this printer for over a year now, and it's still working great. Previous Epson's have gone south on me with clogged nozzles that can't be cleared, using dry inks--before a year is even up, but this Stylus 1400, with the Claria inks, hasn't given me any trouble at all. I might go a month or two without printing, but this printer doesn't stop because of that. I haven't even needed to clear the nozzles.

I've printed close to a hundred full color full coverage CD labels, and am still using the color ink cartridges that came with the printer. I use the printer mainly to print music, which often requires larger format. The black and white dedicated cartridge allows for true black and white printing using only the B&W cartridge (there is a setting in the print controls that provides for this). Printing music requires very high definition, and this printer delivers, even fairing pretty well on plain paper or velum. I just installed my 1st B&W replacement cartridge, with over 100 pages of music printed. Again, no problem with clogged nozzels.

I do not print photos, and won't recommend one way or the other on that. I print my CD labels on high gloss, which look terrific. On matte, the colors are not nearly so good and the red is quite off. Perhaps this could be corrected by color settings if I knew how, but I don't have the need.

The inks are expensive, though the color 5 pack is under $60 at Amazon now. For a low volume user like me, ink cost has not turned into an issue as I find the printer to be more reasonable with the inks than previous Epsons. I haven't had to waste any ink clearing the nozzees, and maybe that's the difference.

The printer delivers big time on wide format, high definition printing for my uses: fine detail B&W music printing, and high gloss color CD labels.

Diappointing
I've had this printer about six months, and it has really been a let-down. I bought it for photos and CDs.

For a couple months it produced lovely photos. Now, the ink has to be recalibrated every time, which takes about 45 mins and pounds of ink. After calibration, it prints about 20 good-looking photos, and then they look like trash again.

For such an expensive printer, I expected better.

The CDs on the special tray always come out looking great. For that, I give this two stars. I wish I had bought a cheaper printer. I will NEVER buy another Epson.

Excellent quality, large footprint, pricey ink
If you're looking for a larger format photo printer, this prints beautifully. Prior to this I had a Epson Stylus Photo R300. Now, comparing the two of those, in terms of print quality, I printed the same photo on both printers with the same settings in the software and I couldn't tell the difference between the two. So if you're just looking to print up to standard paper size (8.5 x 11) or smaller prints, maybe you don't need to shell out the extra money for this one. You can go for one of the less expensive Epson printers instead.

However, this printer has much higher ink quality. I have noticed that prints from my old Epson have faded somewhat over time. The inks in this printer will last much much longer (allegedly) and it prints much larger prints (so it has a larger footprint than other photo printers).

I'm using Mac OS X (Leopard) and the software is straightforward and works well. I also love having the ability to print directly onto printable CD-Rs (though my R300 also did that). Another plus is that this printer prints much much faster than my R300 - easily twice as fast, which is really nice. One drawback is that my R300 had a little display and buttons to navigate through different menu options directly on this printer. This printer lacks that functionality and I find that I miss it.

All in all, this is a great printer if you need to print larger long-lasting prints.

great color
The Epson Stylus Photo Printer 1400 was a breeze to set up. The colors are deep and clear. On b&w archive scanned photos, the richness was outstanding. Works great with Photoshop Elements. Great value for being able to print 11x17 borderless prints.

Excellent Machine--Especially for the price.
I bought this to replace another 13x19 printer from Epson. The old one was doing fine, but this new one intrigued me-- more inks, and thus better photos, plus the ability to do borderless 13x19 was a nice bonus. But what put it over the edge was the ability to print on CDs.

After having used the printer for several projects, I can say that I am fully satisfied. The inks are very nice, and true to life. CD printing is easy and effective.
