Maybe I just don't get it
I spent a ridiculous amount of time "working" my way through this book - all for naught. I would not recommend it for anyone but those with lots of time to devout to a story that is, yes, beautifully written, but becomes a struggle to figure out exactly where it is going. There were so many loose ends here I found my curiosities about the characters unanswered. Not to mention it seemed so absurd that a mohter would instruct her minor son in the 1950's to run off, and stay in the woods, while she covorts with the nasty uncle - it simply made no sense to me, why on earth would Claude murder Gar? Because as siblings they fought about stupid things. Gimme a break. I have passed this book on to no one.

A Real Snoozer
I love dogs, but this never-ending trying-to-be-poignant tale doesn't do dogs justice. Another of Oprah's shills.

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle
I loved the book, finding it one that I could not put down. It was not predictable as there is suspense through out, but also great compassion.
The author has great insight into human nature as well as dog-nature. This is a book not to miss. I have recommended it to all of my friends.

Edgar Sawtelle
The book starts out with an exciting beginning, but falls short. After 500 pages the author gives a 3 page ending that does not answer any questions. There are certain sections in the book (such as, when the dead father appears in the rain and the spirit in the shed that appeared to Edgar) where I felt the book was taking a different turn; but nothing percipitated. I had my eye on this book from when it first came out and bought it with Oprah Winfrey's recommendation and was highly disappointed in the characters. The book started ideas and actions that had no ending.
