Great artist, mediocre song
David Cook is going to be great. We've already seen his potential with his performances of Hello, Billie Jean, Always Be My Baby, All I Really Need is You, and (no matter what Simon Cowell says) The World I Know. The winning song this year is pretty much like last year's. The lyrics are cliche and the melody is very safe and formulaic. I expect a lot more from David Cook's future album - assuming the record company doesn't force him to sing mediocre songs like this one.

Just wait
Yes this song is cheesy, but it's appropriate for the "moment". Plus, it's not his song per-se. It's the winning song that's chosen by the producers of A.I. He's gotta walk their line for now, and then we'll see the real David Cook a little later.
Anyone who was lucky enough to buy Analog Heart before it vanished (me), has already heard his true potential. His stuff with Axium isn't bad either. He's not Daughtry-esque at all. In fact these two would make an excellent double bill for a concert.
Anyway, Analog Heart, which is D.C.'s freshman solo album from 2006 is a superb, indie album. Problem is, I don't think anybody outside of Tulsa heard it prior to American Idol. If his RCA album is half as good as Analog Heart, he'll be around for a while.

Been here, heard this.
The vocals are lame and "Daughteryesque".
The instrumentation is pop/rock and has been done before.
The lyrical content is cheesy at best.
Boring.

It's really growing on me
I'm not a big fan of AI coronation songs, but this one has gotten into my head and I can't stop listening to it. It reminds me a little of Lifehouse's "You and Me" (or at least I keep mentally segueing from one to the other, which usually means they have something in common in terms of the melody). So, no, this is not my usual taste, but David Cook is an original and he can make even a coronation song sound fresh and moving. I have no doubt that his music after AI will sound less poppy, but I still think this is a decent debut.

AMAZING
This man can sing! Looking forward to a FULL ALBUM!!! Have to admit the winning songs on Idol are normally a little on the cheesy side BUT he makes this one into something special.
