Great writing and acting make this show a winner
This show has become one of my all-time TV favorites due to an unusual teaming of quality scripts with superb acting. Most TV shows offer us caricatures instead of characters, but the characters on Saving Grace have depth and complexity. This is a sophisticated show with enough content to satisfy.

One or two episodes in Season One made me worry that the show would devolve into a soapbox for a simplistic religious message, but happily, this turned out not to be the case. No matter what your religious bent or lack thereof, Saving Grace depicts universal themes that have gripped people for millenia: our struggle to do the right thing no matter what it requires of us; the struggle to forgive ourselves for the things we have done that caused hurt to others; and the struggle to come to terms with the ways we were hurt by other people (should we forgive them?) These questions are the stuff of religion and the question of religious faith is the framework for Grace's battle, but the focus remains on the actual battles, not the simple trappings of "belief" or "faith".

The show's writers have managed to create good, flawed characters you can recognize and like, and the cast is masterful at depicting them. This is TV police drama at its absolute best.

So hooked now!
I Tivo a few shows a week - and they are generally on in the background as we (G and I) do any number of things. But this show just reached out and grabbed us - sat our butts down and compelled attention. Not because of 24-ish explosions or maudlin, mellow-dramatic plot twists. It's just good story telling and a leading lady I have always really liked. But it's more than that. Maybe its the contrast of a bottle of booze and/or an angel in every other scene. Maybe the fact that the characters are so very believable and yet so very uncommon. Certainly, its the contrast of a really big woman (read: really big mouth and attitude) in a such little frame. I think there's a story here - threaded throughout a season or 2 - that says something worth thinking about. I feel like a voyeur half the time. I can't wait for the season finale. What is going to happen? Tell me tell me! No. Let me just savor this unraveling.... Bart

Great character
I love this show. The premise is absurd, but if you just focus on Holly Hunter's wonderful performance of a tough cop with problems, you can sail along for the ride. She drinks like a fish, she smokes like a chimney, but she's a good cop, a good aunt, a good friend. Good humor, not gruesome like too many contemporary crime dramas. The swearing is realistic and doesn't bother me. A lot of fun. I hope it lasts. I will buy it when it comes on DVD!
